The morning of Holocaust Memorial Day was a day of officialdom, remembrance, reflection and contemplation. Take away the colour of the day, the blue skies, the sunshine, the colour of a wintery spring type day and much of the narrative of the day belongs within the static moments captured by static images. Smiles turn to thinking, which turn to tears. Power among men deflates in the presence of real sacrifices, heritage and unity of communities whose survival provides hope for future generations wishing to live in freedom. As Martha Wise said the survival of all those holocaust victims is a "revenge" against those who believed in exterminating a whole community, not a revenge in the physical aggressive sense, but in a manifestation of will, of succumbing hardships and moving on.
