Gibraltar - 3rd February 2017 - The Royal Gibraltar Police, assisted by the Gibraltar Defence Police and other associated service, launched a manhunt for a male person at around 1630hrs on Friday 3rd February after reports received from the area of westside. Although not confirmed by police, the initial reports suggested a male person had been seen acting suspiciously carrying a suspected "firearms."
Officers, including Armed Response Units were deployed in the area between Gib V and Mid Harbours. A forward base was also deployed in the area of Queensway, away from direct public sight in order to reduce concerns amongst the public as the investigation and search took place.
As police presence in the area increased and social media saw a flurry of activity with the "Chinese whispers" rumour mill highly active, concern increased among members of the public. The normal Friday congregation of people in the area of westside, where Morrison's store is located, saw a reduced number of people using the area as many kept away.
A police warning describing a male person they were looking for further heightened the anxieties of the public.
At around 1930hrs the area of Westside was soon lit with the blue lights of an Armed Response vehicle racing south through traffic as it left the Varyl Begg area deployed elsewhere. With police vans and plain clothed officers also in the same area the focus changed further down the road.
